Red Book Setup

To make your Notebook look and function the way you want, you'll need to provide some information. Before you do anything else, though, you should SAVE A COPY OF THIS FILE in the appropriate Notebook folder. You may then want to change the title of this file and the heading above, so you don't get confused about which Notebook you're setting up.

Note: This file is designed to be edited with a wysiwyg HTML editor. If you don't have a wysiwyg editor, you will have to edit it however you normally edit HTML files. Whichever way you edit, you can always check that the file is correctly set up by looking at it in a browser. In general, your Notebook should work correctly if this page works: if the links all work, the text fields have the correct values, the GIFs load correctly, and proper security permission has been granted to the BinderMinder (see below).

Setup and Decor

• Make a link to your cover page (the external cover of your Notebook): COVER PAGE
• Make a link to your very first page (the one you want to appear when a viewer first opens your Notebook, before any tabs are clicked): INTRO PAGE .
• Your Notebook needs three background GIFs: one each for the spine of closed book, the spine of the open book, and the edges of the pages in the navigation frame. You can choose these by inserting the appropriate images in the "Experiment" cells of the table below.
• Your Notebook has three places where a "trim" colour may be chosen: around the binding on the outside cover, around the binding on the inside cover, and around the navigation buttons and tabs. You may choose these separately, but generally, you will want the outside trim to match the cover colour or to match the background GIF of the cover. The navigation area trim could be chosen to complement your tabs, and the inside cover trim could be chosen to match either of the other two. The default colour for all three is black.

  The table below contains a place for you to enter each trim colour. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to read colours directly from a table cell background, so while you can experiment in the middle cell to see what a colour looks like, you will have to enter the name or the number of that colour directly into the box. (If you need to, you can look at the source of this file to find the name or number of the colour you put in the Experiment cell.)

Tabs and Sections

For every section in your Notebook, you will need to provide the information requested a table like the ones below.

• You should insert a Title in the text field, make a link to the Index Page of the section (the page that appears when a viewer clicks on the section tab), and place an image in each of the four Tab cells. You need not include all of the sections listed in your Notebook; just be sure that the ones you do want to include are listed first, and in the order you want them. (To rearrange sections, resrrange the tables. You may delete any tables you don't need, or copy more if you need them.) How many of the sections listed below do you want to appear in your Notebook?
• How big are your tabs (in pixels)? width: height: (For best results, the tabs should be no more than about 40 pixels wide.)
• Please note that each tab can appear in four possible states:
  • dead (what it looks like if nothing happens when the viewer clicks on it)
  • off (what it looks like when it's alive but unclicked, and the cursor is not over it)
  • on (what it looks like when it's alive but unclicked, and the cursor is over it)
  • clicked (what it looks like after it's been clicked).

  You should put the correct image for each state of each tab in the corresponding boxes above the state labels. It doesn't matter where in your Notebook the tab images are stored: as long as the they appear correctly here, they should work correctly in your Notebook. You may want to keep them all together in their own folder, for example, or put the images for each tab in the ART folder inside the appropriate section folder. You may reuse the same GIF for different tab images; for instance the "dead" GIF could be the same for all tabs, or the "off" and "on" GIFs for each tab could be the same, or some other arrangement.
