To demonstrate BinderBabies and how to read them,
I produced a small sample “children’s book” called “The Buzz About Honeybees”.
The screen shots below illustrate how to navigate this booklet. Fuller
instructions were supplied on the BinderBabies website.

|
|
The first step: click on the link to the BinderBaby.
The booklet opened in a separate, resizable window and showed a "Loading
... please wait" page, followed shortly by the cover of the BinderBaby. |
|
Clicking on the cover opened the BinderBaby to the
contents page and gave access to the navigation buttons.
Notice that the contents page for this booklet listed three sections.
You navigated to these sections by clicking on a numbered tab. |
|
|
|
|
|
Suppose you clicked on tab 3. Tab 3 took on its clicked
appearance and the booklet went to the Section 3
header page.
Note the button.
This button was a toggle: it took you back and forth to the contents
page.
|
|
The content of each section was organized into branching
paths. You started on any path by clicking a link to it on another
page. On the header page for Section 3 (above), there was only one
link: to the flowers path. Clicking on
that link took you to page 1 of the flowers path.
You could then follow this path by using the pager buttons at
the top of the navigation area.
Note the coloured tab numbers. The numbers on each tab GIF were
transparent, allowing the background to show through. |
|
|
|
|
|
Here's a diagram for the flowers path
and all its subpaths. A page which linked to a path (green dot) was
then considered to be the "zeroth" page of that path.
The page above has two paths linked to it: pollen and nectar.
Page two of the pollen path has two subpaths
linked to it. |
|
The
final navigation button was the level indicator/navigator.
It took several forms, depending on which level path you were on.
It showed schematically a level 1 path (thick, vertical), a level
2 path (horizontal) and a level 3 path (thin, vertical). (BinderBabies
supported three levels of paths.) The red path was where you were
currently, and the green dot is where you went if you clicked this
button.
The page shown to the right is the first page of the bee
dances path, a level 2 path. |
